What to Do the Day You're Served
Take a breath. Being served is the start of a court process, not the end of it. Here's what to do, in order.
Today
- Write down the date and time you were served.
- Keep every page together in a folder.
- Find the case number and the court on the summons.
- Count 20 days on a calendar and circle the deadline.
This week
- Contact a licensed Florida foreclosure attorney or legal aid office.
- Call a HUD-approved housing counselor (free).
- Request a free review of your options from us.
- Gather mortgage statements, letters, and proof of income.
What not to do
- Don't ignore the papers or miss the deadline.
- Don't sign your deed over to anyone who contacts you out of the blue.
- Don't send mortgage payments to anyone other than your servicer.
